Peak Season Surcharges Implemented for Oceania Region

Starting July 1, 2024, a Peak Season Surcharge will be introduced due to increased demand in the Oceania region. This surcharge will apply to shipments from Australia and New Zealand to various destinations including Europe, the UK, Africa, and other global regions. The rates will vary depending on the destination, with the highest surcharges applied to certain regions and lower rates for others.

The Red Sea crisis has led to a prolonged disruption, with major container carriers diverting services from Asia to Europe around southern Africa for safety reasons. This diversion, in place for over six months, follows the hijacking of the Galaxy Leader by Houthi rebels. Germany Begins Construction of First Onshore LNG Terminal

Germany’s first onshore LNG terminal construction commenced at the inland port of Stade, aiming for operation by 2027. The project includes two large LNG storage tanks and plans to adapt for hydrogen energy in the future. Major utility companies have committed to purchasing 90% of the terminal’s capacity, supporting Germany’s energy diversification efforts.

Canadian Rail Workers Reauthorize Strike Action

Canadian rail workers affiliated with the TCRC have voted overwhelmingly to reauthorize strike action, potentially disrupting supply chains. The union claims rail services cannot be deemed essential, allowing a strike with 72 hours’ notice if approved. Shippers are preparing for possible disruptions from mid-July, with ongoing negotiations unlikely to resolve the dispute soon.

South Carolina Ports Address Vessel Delays

South Carolina Ports (SC Ports) is implementing solutions to reduce vessel delays, including pausing toe wall construction at Wando Welch Terminal. This project, crucial for maintaining berth depth, has contributed to delays but will be paused from July 3 to 14 to expedite ship processing. SC Ports aims to handle ships on arrival by mid-July, with further improvements planned.

Paris MoU Detention Rates Remain High Post-Pandemic

The Paris MoU’s 2023 report shows a slight decrease in detention rates to 3.81% but still above pre-pandemic levels. Inspections continue to highlight issues with fire protection, structural integrity, and crew welfare. The inclusion of Montenegro’s Maritime Authority in the Paris MoU enhances regional safety and compliance efforts.
